we will see somebody in the BCS title 2010...

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4374311

the thing most impressive about this story is:
"I believe that Urban Meyer is the best at what he does," Machen said. "He demands excellence of his players on the field and in the classroom. Not only did the University of Florida win a national championship in January, but all 13 seniors earned degrees and the 2008 football team tied an SEC-league record with 37 players named to the SEC academic honor roll. We're proud he's a Gator."

in a day and age where it seems alot of times that academics and college sports are mutually exclusive it is cool to see that the champions (not just some poor football program) are actually matriculating students....you have some once-were-good football programs whining that academic standards are the reason they can't compete and you have other schools getting in trouble forgiving academics standards----and then there is florida (knock on wood)......

nevertheless i think he should be commended for the program he is running and also i think this is a big reason he is able to compete because these guys don't want to leave school (so quickly) for the fame and money in the NFL.

on another note, give these guys a reasonable stipend:
"The Florida athletic department has contributed $17.3 million to the university since Meyer's arrival on campus in 2005. "

  2. Urban Meyers is making $4M a year, which is more than many NFL head coaches. College football players need to get paid. They generate way too much revenue for their plantation owners, I mean athletic directors. And now the overseers are getting paid ridiculous salaries to coach when they aren't even at the top of their sport (that would be the NFL).

Take $1M off that salary and you can pay 100 football players $10K more per year over what their current stipend is.

It is good that the players are graduating, but only 13 seniors? that means most of them are leaving early. And what are they graduating and earning honors in? The article didn't specify which doesn't inspire confidence that they are really learning anything of use.

  3. Urban Meyer is getting paid what he deserved, 2 BCS championships in 4 years in the hardest conference in college football. He'd make much more on the open market...capitalism at it's best.

I honestly belive that college football players would get paid if the NFL allowed high school players and underclassmen to come out early.

  4. Is it impressive to graduate players when they are majoring in Recreation Studies, Communications, Advanced Furniture Making and my favorite "Family, Youth, and Community Services"... which is Trey's hero Tim Tebow's actual major???

  5. My bad... "Family, Youth, and Community SCIENCES". I didn't realize it was a science. Wonder if there is a laboratory requirement.

  6. most athletes pretty much have the same make up of majors so it is an apples to apples comparison...what does that say about other programs that can't graduate ppl with these same concentrations....

  7. Laughing my ASS off at Ace's comments.....

But on the real though, regardless what their majors are, it's unfair to devalue the discipline and level of accomplishments these players put forth on and off the field and in the classroom. I actually applaud them for taking their academics serious point blank. With winning 2 BCS titles (I can't agree with it being the hardest football conference) it's telling why they were able to win two BCS during the head coach's watch.. They were focused like crazy!!

I have a ton of friends who willingly remind of how proud they are to be a gator and that shit annoys the hell out of me, but I am being objective here and will say that the head coach is deserving of $4 Mill a year. Now if you had a head coach with the same resume at your Alma Mater would you be critical of his salary? Just asking, not trying to play devil's advocate but would just like to know... Cause if NC State had a head coach like this he'd probably get a raise, just for graduating 13 seniors that made the Dean's list.

  9. I can't respect "Family, Youth, and Community SCIENCES" at face value. I'm sorry, there are majors that you can BS your way through. Especially when a good percentage of those students are athletes that the school depends on to generate revenue.

However I know enough smart and intelligent people to exclude Communications from that list.

I don't fully agree with Trey's assessment that this is an apples to apples comparison. Are these schools accredited in their BS majors? Accreditation is the only thing that
