What newspapers haven't learned from the music industry

http://www.paidcontent.org/entry/419-the-ap-takes-on-the-internet-lessons-to-be-learned-from-the-music-indus/

It's still crazy for me to realize that an industry (print news media) is dying in my lifetime, but they can only blame themselves...The AP killed independent reporting years ago by having 1 (now 2 or 3 with Rueters and the other folks), and now they're just getting supplanted.

ASU Snubs Barack for honorary degree

Now when I first glanced at this headline I thought it was funny. I thought ASU made the statement that Barack Obama is too experienced to receive an honorary degree from ASU. I could see that. But then I read on to find out that the University in fact thinks that Barack Obama isn't experienced enough to receive an honorary degree from ASU. I'm sorry I don't want to offend more people than I usually do, but ASU is known as a party school, Barack went to Columbia and Harvard. Now some people in the Wolfpack who will remain nameless would scoff at even going to ASU yet alone taking the time to receive an honorary degree.....

You may ask who does ASU give honorary degrees to?
Well I looked at the list, and I'm not mildly impressed. L Douglas Wilder was on there but everybody else reads like a whose who of mediocrity (in terms of honorary degrees and all).

Ok so Barry Goldwater was on there and he received his oh so coveted honorary degree from ASU 3 before he was the Republican nominee for President, and he lost. Sandra Day O'Conner, important, received her's 3 years into her 25 years on the Supreme Court. I'm sure some of the people are important and have accomplished some things, but I'm pretty sure not one of them has ever been close to being the most powerful person in the world, without the help of daddy.

Pirates of the African Horn

http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/africa/04/09/ship.hijacked/index.html

below is my favorite subject line in these wrath of pirate stories:

"Larsen says the root conditions of poverty, lawlessness and civil war on the ground in Somalia are to blame. The large sums of ransom money being paid out to pirates, he says, is even leading some Somali women to venture to the port town of Bosaso in hopes of marrying these newly-rich men."

i heard that nice guys finish last but this is whole 'nother level....here women flock to drug dealers. in somalia its pirates....this just sounds crazy because pirates make me think of captain jack sparrow...i guess some professions never die....

nevertheless these guys are getting paid (are they killing them later)....i am surprised ransom is being paid....

continuation of conversation around the rise in unwedded motherhood

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/

While 28 percent of white women gave birth out of wedlock in 2007, nearly 72 percent of black women and more than 51 percent of Latinas did.

England assumed many of the fathers would have high-tailed it out of the picture by the sixth month of pregnancy, leaving single mothers "truly single," the sociologist said. Instead, she found that in 80 percent of the non-marital births, parents stayed romantically involved and in 50 percent of the cases they were living together.

sexting....is it child pornography

http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/04/07/sexting.busts/index.html

"According to the study, 51 percent of girls say it's "pressure from guys" that's making them send sexual messages and pictures of themselves. So guys are expecting this and our girls are saying "OK." It makes me wonder how much progress we've really made in how young women are viewed and treated."

"According to their study, 39 percent of teens (that's ages 13-19) are sending or posting sexually suggestive messages over IM, text or e-mail and around the same number of teens are receiving such messages. Half of those teens, 20 percent, are sending or posting nude or semi-nude pictures of themselves. That's frightening."
