What Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith just talked about

They were having a discussion on the enigma that is ?F Lamar Odom (position in question after last week's SF argument).

Question: What other team in the NBA would Lamar Odom be unquestionably the 3rd best player?

Answer (on the show): None..
My Answer: Maybe Boston, but that's really hard to say next year unless this "playoff" Rando turns out to be the real thing (Doubtful)

  1. Lamar is so skilled. I'm not sure that there are more than 3-5 players with his all around game. Size, Strength, Handles, Speed, Kills the Boards, Vision, Great Passer, Can shoot with range, can D up 3 and 4's, he's a matchup problem for everyone. He has all the tools. He just doesn't have the eternal motivation to be great. He has to be pushed. He's way too passive. It's frustrating as a fan. He could be a top 3 forward in the league if he had consistent passion and motivation. Oh well, not everyone has what it takes. It's too bad, cause he has the game.

  2. i agree lamar odom has game....he is "the goods". i am a fan of odom as i mentioned before he saved one of my fantasy basketball teams when he was balling as a clipper...i looked like a genious because the people thought that odom was a "sleeper" pick....they thought i drafted him too high.

i was thinking this weekend if there was a such thing as a basketball decatholon (3 pt shoot out, free throw comp, the skills competition, a rebounding drill, a dunking drill, etc.) i would think lamar would compete hard. i found myself asking this question when i was frustrated with josh smith's up&down offensive game while trying to justify why he is so GOOD---the decathalon justified his existence...don't ask.

i digress---odom would be the third best player on a number of teams TODAY regardless of my aforementioned love for him:
    hands down:
hornets (i would rather have west at this point than odom)
    jazz
    nuggets
    nets
    rockets
    spurs
    wizards
boston (at this point truth, jesus, and ticket are better)
    blazers

    maybes (you can argue):
bucks (depending on how good you think RJ is)
bulls (is he better than rose and gordon)
    suns
cavs (i'd rather have mo than odom)
    sixers with healthy brand
dallas (weird but i think odom comes off the bench in dallas)
magic (i'd rather have hedo over odom but not lewis)

i think a big part of odom's perceived detioration in play is strongly tied to having to default to kobe ALL THE TIME...it makes you lazy (weird but this makes me appreciate pippen a little more)....having gasol makes this even worst similar to rice playing for the lakers...if odom say played for the clippers i think he would play similar to the way he did with the heat in that playoff run (better doesn't always show up in numbers but intensity/assertiveness which is where most ppl say he loses it sometimes)

another thing trevor, you know i am not a rondo supporter (i still hate his cradle passes and scoop missed lay ups) but you can't dismiss averaging a triple double in the playoffs (this without garnett)...he fills the stat sheet in the playoffs...rondo is for real...if healthy and together next year they could be dangerous again and it is all because of his improvement....starbury can't get know PT....

  3. rondo is averaging 23.3 pts, 10.0 ast, 10.8 rebs, 3.5 stls against a backcourt that includes 2008-9 ROY rose, 2004-5 6thMOY gordon and 2006-7 All D 2nd team kirk hinrich....

  4. Yes - Nets, Jazz (Boozer healthy is better than Lamar, but he's Mr. Glass), Nuggets, Magic, Suns
Maybe - Celtics (I'm convinced KG's knees are starting to go, it's quick when that happens to a big man, hence the Rondo statement), Wizards (do you know what Agent Zero looks like now with 2 knee injuries), Hornets (I don't know, I always thought West benefited a whole lot from CP3)

  5. trevor you act like lamar is a young man....

i like lamar, but i would rather have boozer, west, old KG, even old shaq, gilbert on my team than lamar odom....

you can replace lamar odom more easily than the guys i mentioned...if lamar gets hurt the lakers still win the champinoship...

if boozer was out the jazz would not make the playoffs
if shaq was out the suns would not have won 30 games
if west was out the hornets don't make the playoffs
you see where the wiz are without agent 0

lamar is skilled but i can get his skills from other players (or a combination of other players). next year if there is astraight up trade garnett for odom the lakers jump on this while ppl look at the celts as idiots. if trade is offered between boozer and odom, gilbert an odom, same thing...only shaq would be questionable because of age and salary but he is still better NOW....
