  1. that was a long-winded way to say he will not be mainstream... asking jay elect to be mainstrean/commercial is like asking the people to embrace SERIOUS nomination of sharpton or jesse for president... obama was taken seriously; i love obama but he is to presidential nomination what hammer is to rap (almost). i mean how popular was public enemy and rakim with anglo saxons....

i think they sad thing about it all is "conscious hip hop heads", "back packers", whatever you want to call them probably would have a problem with ay selling over a million units. it would not feel the same. that says a couple of bad things about our society mainly "young people don't like knowledge". or think of it as how certain hardcore country heads have a problem with today's pop country stars. the core fan of anything hates it when his product is embraced by many, which hurts the artist trying to make a living... sad weird circle of events... either you sellout and support your family or stay underground, work to death, possibly entertaining a second job and stay broke and angry...

    i am tripping now...

  2. one more point.... do you know how annoyed i get with people who claim to be outkast fans and have only been listening to them since idlewild, hey ya, the farthest back maybe being b.o.b.... think of how hard core paper bag "aints" fans feel hearing now that everyone is a saint fan.

  3. Ok so I got thru reading this article and skimmed through a few responses only to say this: Hip-hop epitomize every individuality or best put temperament out there. You have your Glamour rappers 95% of their songs are bragging about their possessions (i.e. how long their money is, jewelry, cars, cribs, how many woman they can sleep with at one time, *yawn*). Then you have your Hustler rappers talking about selling kilos, how they got X amount of trap houses, how they sold crack or how they got that work coming from overseas, blah blah blah. Sadly enough those styles of rap get the most commercial attention or platform because it is effective in distracting our attention.

I value conscience rappers (pure lyricist, political & religious rappers) because they keep us rooted/focused on the real opposition; and because of Jay Elect's position in the rap game he will not get the commercial appeal or success that J.Cole or Drake is receiving. When it comes to rap, I've never seen a conscience rapper win a Grammy unless. Now if you rap like Ludacris, T.I., Jay-Z, Eminem, Kanye West (pseudo conscience )i.e. then the academy recognizes. Kanye didn't win a grammy for 'Jesus Walks' which despite the usage of Jesus in it had a very POWERFUL Message that is so relevant to this article.

I think if people gave Jay Electronica an honest shot, it may change conventional minds that underground rappers can manage commercial success without selling out.
