Shawn Knowles-Carter

So apparently Mr. Big Pimpin' Jay-Z, aka Shawn Carter, and Beyonce Knowles have decided to combine their last names to Knowles-Carter. I repeat, Jay-Z is changing his name to Shawn Knowles-Carter. The justification here is that Beyonce's parents don't have any sons, so they want the "Knowles" name to carryforward.

A few of us discussed this via text last night. I (and Chase) think is this whack. How does a man take on his wife's name? Maybe I'm being old school here, but I think this is some estrogen imbalanced shit. Trey and Emeka (Jay-Z fan #1) understand the decision. Their argument is that Jay-Z doesn't like his father (thus he doesn't care about the Carter name), and it's ultra-important to Beyonce and not a big deal to Shawn, so he's making her happy. Some BS like that.

Thoughts?

Beyoncé and Jay-Z are reportedly planning to change their names now that they are married.

The couple wed in April and have kept their own surnames until now.

However, the pair have decided to combine their last names and be referred to as Knowles-Carter - Jay-Z becoming Shawn Knowles-Carter and his wife Beyoncé Knowles-Carter.

An insider told the Daily Star: "They want to keep Knowles because Beyoncé's parents didn't have any sons.

"They're keen to keep the name going strong, especially if they don't produce any children themselves."

  1. Rule #1 when you get married, you do not allow your in-laws to have any say in your marriage. This applies double for people who make songs like Big Pimpin... Seriously that's some bullshit. At least the name doesn't sound stupid though.

Like I said yesterday, if he doesn't care about his name he should have changed it to his mother's last name decades ago. That's what many guys who carry around hate for their absentee fathers do.

So what does Joe Camel Knowles-Carter II do when he gets married? If his wife's name is Jones-Jackson is he going to change his name to Joe Camel Jones-Jackson-Knowles-Carter?

  2. it's just a more enlighten, unsavagery, anti-neantherthal way of carrying names... doing x,y and z simply becuase your parents (and the ones before them) did it a certain way do not make it right. being objective and putting my cultuarlized male machoism aside this is wait for it semi-FAIR. who says the male name should be the one carried on... the same folks that original thought men were born smarter than women. oh wait some folks still think that. i am not saying i would do it but i understand and i know the reasons why i won't do it is probably due to my own insecurities as a man...

all i am saying is be objective about the subject and see what makes sense...

to answer the question they pass down the hyphenated name knowles-carter to their children... it gets complicated after that with garndchildren but i am sure whomever knowles-carter jr weds will be happy to pass the hypenated name further and so on. in fact there daughter's husband may shock us all and take on teh name or pass it down to his kids vs his own... i'm just saying

  3. This is the most ridiculous assertion i have ever seen, truly and utterly some BS. If they (B's dad) were concerned about keeping the Knowles name, he would have made some of those illegimate boys legal by marrying the baby-mamma. Miss me with this BS...
