Can the option work in the NFL?

This deserves a seperate post....

Trey: Basically is the press in the NBA similar to the option in the NFL in that players are too skilled for it to stop them or are guys lazy?

Me: I'm convinced the option could work in the NFL, but you'd probably need 2 QBs who could run it. Vick was the closest thing, and he took some SICK hits while running.

Trey: i don't think the option could work repeatedly like say a team runs it 4 times a game...i think the average yardage would be -6....

  1. When it comes down to it, the Wildcat is a singleback play with an option read, and possible a pass option (to the QB/WR). NFL players are just scared to pitch the ball. That play worked for Miami, which ends up running it about 5-10 times a game for 5+ yards a pop.

    It can work.

  2. I say it won't work because you expose your QB to too many vicious hits. This works in college because LBs aren't as strong and QBs are pretty expendable. Even more than that all NFL players study film, college players can rely on their athleticism, so defenses will recognize it and snuff it out in the NFL.

I don't even think the wildcat will work this year. And all it takes is one QB getting lit up when they line up as a WR. Remember if they line up as a WR the QB protection rules don't apply.

  3. i think there is shock value to all offnesive schemes...look at what one year did to sean payton...he went from offensive genius to imbecile in one year because of no versatility...garrett is in a similar category as well (i know chase will love that one)...you have to switch it up a little; basically i think the wildcat has one more year of success which is why tebow should have come out last year...i think if a team got in the mode of running the option 3x per game, by the 5th game and enough film generated they would be better off running off tackle or FB dive even...you say a team needs to 2 QBs...most teams don't have one QB and you think they will magically find another to run option with...right now the only team that probably fits this model is the ravens with smith and flacco...they could possibly run option but i can think of other plays i would rather run with that sort of talent. vick could run the option on some level (but not successfully) and he was the fastest most athletic QB ever pretty much (vick talent at QB does not come around too often; these guys are usually converted to RB/WR)....maybe if the league did not take all black QBs and convert them to WR this might be viable (maybe)...i guess boldin, hines, randle-el, wallace, matt jones, mcfadden, arnaz battle, eric crouch, charlie ward, pat white, kordell, (probably 25% of the league played QB at some point in their football career running the option in pop warner) could make this dream come true... i think defenses are too fast in the league....

i want to say they pitch the ball a couple of times to rickey on that wildcat option and that generally was the most unsuccessful play out of that formation....so typed this and decide to search the plays

click on all the plays...they never really pitched the ball or pretended to pitch the ball out of this formation....to me this is not much of an option. when i say option i am thinking the run-stretch play and i think this is flaw at the nfl level...you can't stretch the defense running because they are too fast and it requires you to sometimes hold blocks long which ain't happening at this level
