Free Agent Media Summit

Bill Simmons, Kornheiser, Wilbon, and Trey's boy Le Batard (BAM!) on NBA Free Agency. It's long, but worth watching when you have several minutes.

  1. i JUST saw this... the funniest thing was them discussing the old overpaid free agents (AI, shaq, tmac, and jermaine o'neal).

there are so many free agents... i can't believe no one is talking about rudy gay, boozer or ray allen really. i think those three guys are affordable second tier for boozer and third tier for the gay and ray... meaning if boozer is your second best player you may be able to compete for a title. if ray or gay are your third best player you should be able to compete for a title (also david lee).... next basketball season will be interesting.

    some questions to ponder:
where does joe johnson end up considering he will go to poor teams for money? everyone is kinda linking him to the notion of the other high profile guys that are title hungry... not sure if that is joe.

where do the aging foursome end up? i agree that jermaine and tmac can help teams in a stackhouse-grant hill sort of way but their days as main guys is ending. iverson and shaq are interesting because lately they have been deemed as aging, detrimental liabilities so it will be interesting to see if they want titles or what and what role they accept.

who will be fooled by the recent jj reddick play... jj has improved (i like reddick as a ROLE PLAYER) but don't get it twisted.... his ceiling is korver and look how that worked out for the jazz.

where does dirk go? does he really want to win... how pissed will cuban be if he left?

will the clippers and nets with all this money really make themselves better?

  2. AI is done. He won't accept the Stackhouse or Finley role, so he's done. He still thinks he's a #1 or #2. The reality is he's a role player now. Great players have a hard time taking a step down. So he's done. Shaq is done too. Too slow, clogs the lane... He's not effective without his athletism anymore. T-Mac is Mr. Glass... he won't last 40+ games anymore. I wouldn't waste my time or money on him. Jermaine O'neal can be servicable. He can play that Rasheed Wallace role now. I'd throw the minimum exemption at him if I needed a backup big man. Other than that these guys are way done.

Regarding the other free agents... Joe Johnson will take the most money possible. If someone offers him the max, then he's there. He isn't tripping on winning or his legacy. He just wants to get paid... not a bad thing. If I'm a borderline all-star like him, then I'm just playing for the paycheck too. Let Wade, Bron, Dirk, etc worry about the legacy/winning crap.

Regarding Jesus... how much more does he have left? He shot his wad in the 1st half of game 2 and was done after that. I mean 0-13 done. Dude was broke for most of the series. Can you count on him as your #3? I don't think so. He was #4 in Boston and we saw what happened. I can't pay him serious money at this stage of his career. Maybe Artest/Ariza free agent money at best. That might be pushing it.

I like Boozer, Lee, and Gay as #3 type guys with the right team. Someone will overpay for these fools though.

By the way, I bet 18:1 on Chicago and 25:1 on Miami to win the NBA championship next year while I was in Reno last weekend. Isn't Lebron and others going to one of these two teams? Probably now a bad bet, even though the Lakers will 3-peat anyway.

My call is Lebron to Chicago. I like the Wade/Bron/Bosh super team, but Lebron has too much ego to ride Wade's coattails to a championship. He wants to win more than Wade and will always be 1 behind if he is on the same team.

  3. Okay I have to admit this free agent offseason for the NBA has me somewhat interested, but only a little. It will be interesting to see who ends up where and how it all works out, maybe I'll watch a game or two in the regular season.
