Tim Tebow & the Combine

Every year we are reminded of one Mike Mamula, a DE picked 7th in the 1995 draft by the Eagles. He ran a 4.63 and matched Tony Boselli in the bench press. To make matters worse the Eagles traded up with the Bucs to get him. The Bucs went on to draft a guy who went to the U by the name of Warren Sapp... Hall of Famer who made playing DT appealling, that Beyonce dance was horrible though...

On to Tim Tebow. I haven't seen this much sandbagging since I first started playing spades. "It will take at least 2 years for him to develop." What other college QB who gets this much press is expected to do nothing for 2 years?

Anyway 245 lb. 6 ounce baby White Jesus put up big numbers at the combine in everything except throwing the football. He tied the record for a QB's vertical jump, 38.5 inches, had a 9-7 broad jump and ran a 4.72 in the 40. Apparently this means he is a better athlete than we thought...

How can people be impressed by a QB that does non-QB stuff well? It should raise flags, if by watching his game film we didn't think he was a great athlete but he performs great at the combine shouldn't the term "Workout Warrior" come to mind?

If I were a GM I'm not drafting this guy early, if at all. I would rather rewind 10 years and draft Mike Vick and watch everything unfold alreadying knowing what will happen (injuries, dog fighting, etc.) rather than draft Tebow and hope for the best.

  1. this is pretty impressive as it means he probably can run the wildcat number one. some folks questioned whether he could do that.

the truth is he put up the best all around numbers for a TE which is impressive if he actually had good qbing skills. another truth is very little notable qb displayed throwing prowess. all qbs with something to lose throw at pro day mainly and not at combine. only the flacco's (unheard-of guys from schools like delaware) help themselves throwing at the combine.

also this raises the question, IS THE COMBINE A WASTE OF TIME? judging by your comments with sapp vs mamula it is and other examples. people should be judged by their college on-the-field play vs an episode of american gladiators.

i think the combine is a good tie breaker. if you are split amongst a few players of equal discipline and on-the-field play you go to the combine similar to standardized tests vs gpa. but if a guy is flat out better on the field and isn't a head case don't bother with the combine. does anyone remember p manning's or drew brees combine numbers. i know brady looked like a DT in the bench press and is not getting it done. i am sure vick blew up the combine but he won his status on-the-field mainly at v tech.

if i got two years for a qb to develop i take a chance on tim tebow. his athleticism is second to none and his willingness to learn also. he has changed throwing motion successfully once already and is doing it again. i would be more confident that he could relearn because he is a good athlete and coachable than say making vick change his style. if i need a qb there is no way i take a chance on tebow. jacksonville with garrard is perfect... play garrard for 2-3 yrs and evaluate tebow along the way.
