Dungeon Family Education

Her Blog

I found this story on a blog from a fellow Howard Alum. It's about music and I'm actually reading it, I'm actually surprised that none of you posted this story. You all are slacking, specifically Emeka (although you don't post anything), Trey (Mr Southern Hip Hop himself) Trevor (you swear by southern music and you probably have 30 gigs of music) and Gary (never met you but you have posted damn near 100 music posts)

Part 1

Part 2

Podcast

What do you all think?
I have never really been into music and this is too early for me to remember anyway...

  1. i was so high off the promise of the dungeon fam as a youth.... i still like dungeon family outkast... that's basically outkast pre stankonia... stankonia is where they sort of left me.... i stand by southernplayal...., atliens, and aquemini as three classic albums. goodie mob's soul food is as an album better than the aforementioned outkast albums i named (i think).... i got chills the first time i saw the cell therapy video... I got that cool breeze too (undrerated album); trev and i were just discussing this album in december i believe....

what happend to them is the same thing that happens to all groups that form in their youth. they grow old and do their own thing; no real fault of anyone in particular. its kinda like your friends high school are not necessarily your friends now... no big deal you keep in touch but you just don't have nearly as much in common in anymore...

you see this everywhere: wu tang, cash money, the rock, g unit, death row, native tongues, etc... you even see this in other genres

also there is the watering down of the crew with stragglers that may not have the same original mindset of the original tight knit group.

i long for the day outkast and goodie can wrap their brain around their 23 yr old selves and give me the compilation album i always wanted but that is impossible... they are in different places and it SUCKS for me but hopefully its good for them.

  2. All the more reason to gradually apply brakes.... I actually have my own blog *since 2006* that I have been posting material on.

Trey most definitely captured what I would say. Albeit it would be interesting to hear what the present day Goodie Mob crew sounds like considering their 15 year hiatus. I too have been and still am a Goodie Mob/ Dungeon Family fan. Heck I lived in Atlanta (during my time at Moorehouse) when they were at the top of their success. I remember meeting CoolBreeze, on the AUC strip when his single dropped. He made an appearance that was memorable for me.

The more obvious sign that the Dungeon Family was growing apart was the relationship Andre3K had with E. Badu. Moreover, no one truly knows or may not fully understand the ins and outs of the situation. Maybe some folks felt out of place with the direction that the Dungeon Family was going or lack of creative control. When I think of Atliens, the album, Andre3K talked so much about being "different, aliens, outkast" and today you hear so many artist including Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Kanye West,Jay Electronica, i.e. talking about getting on their spaceship, cruising thru the solars.... Andre3K talked about this ish first. Yeah Southern rappers definitely contributed more than what NY hip-hop pundits would give them recognition for... Check my next post "Lyricism & Capitalism"....

  3. Yo, I'always really liked Outkast and the Dungeon Family, since the very early days. I used to listen to Southernplaya all the time. I think they were 16 years old when they released that album. Just like Trey, I lost em on Stankonia... Goodie Mob was good too! They showed that video on TV recently after some Award (I think the BET awards) and Mosley sent out a txt. "Who's that peepin in my wnodow... PAW... nobody now" That was hot.

But yeah, this is a great article, interesting to know the history... thanks Chase!

p.s. I don't expect Emeka to know anything about southern music. I think he barely just learned who Outkast is like last year. LOL.

  5. we will get joose there....

it took an introduction from gc and then me making him sit down and listen to appreciate little brother (probably the same for jay elect)....

i understand its hard for some to go way back... those that know me know i don't do CLASSIC movies. i.e. anything in black and white.... i just can't go back and appreciate that. music can be the same way.

  6. I gave Joose one OutKast CD either earlier this year or at the end of last year....

"Got stopped at the mall the other day
Heard a call from the other way
that I just came from, some ***** was sayin somethin
talkin bout "Hey man, you remember me from school?" smoke some
Naw not really but he kept smilin like a clown
    facial expression lookin silly
And he kept askin me, what kind of car you drive, I know you paid
I know y'all got buku of hoes from all them songs that y'all done made
And I replied that I had been goin through tha same thing that he had
True I got more fans than the average man but not enough loot to last me
to the end of the week, I live by the beat like you live check to check
If you don't move yo' feet then I don't eat, so we like neck to neck
Yes we done come a long way like them Slim *** cigarettes
from Virginia, this ain't gon stop so we just gonna continue"
