Robinson vs. Ewing

Figured we might as well close this out. Trey's says that it's a wrap. Ewing over Robinson. I say it's close, but I take Robinson in his prime over Ewing in his prime. I pulled the article below of NBA/Espn experts. They have the list like this.

Years PPG RPG BPG PER
Abdul-Jabbar 20 24.6 11.2 2.6 24.6
Chamberlain 14 30.1 22.9 N/A 26.2
Russell 13 15.1 22.5 N/A 18.9
O'Neal 14 26.3 11.8 2.5 27.8
Olajuwon 18 21.8 11.1 3.1 23.6
Malone 21 20.3 12.3 1.3 22.0
Walton 10 13.3 10.5 2.2 20.0
Robinson 14 21.1 10.6 3.0 26.2
Mikan 7 23.1 13.4 N/A 27.1
Ewing 17 21.0 9.8 2.4 21.0

Basically Robinson #8 alltime and Ewing #10. Obviously there has to be an * on this list because it has Walton as #9, which is ridiculous.

Anyway, let the debate begin.

  1. Because I used to watch basketball I will comment. Obviously not old enough to remember half the list, but here are my thoughts.

Shaq can't be the best because he never fulfilled his potential due to chronic laziness only interrupted by short spurts of motivation from "slights" which were more acknowledgements of his laziness. Never impressed by his defense. Not winning without Kobe... Plug in T Mac, Vincanity, etc but they don't play defense and since Shaq didn't it wouldn't work.

I am tempted to pick Hakeem even though he only won 2 rings to Shaq's 6 and Robinson's 2 rings plus extended relavance. Hakeem had a jumper, a spin move and a post move. Hands down a better defender than Shaq. Hakeem won his first title without a big time number 2. He had Vernon Maxwell, Robert Horry, Kenny Smith and Sam Cassell. Then Clyde the Glide came in to recreate Phi Slamma Jamma.

David Robinson never really seemed elite to me. I remember the Bulls having some tough games against the Spurs when Rodman was there, but he greatly benefitted from Tim Duncan.

Ewing I would put ahead of Robinson but not ahead of Hakeem. Ewing had Anothony Mason, John Starks (who did not dunk on His Airness), Alan Houston and Larry Johnson at the end.

All of these centers lose points for winning while Jordan was on hiatus (gambling suspension if you ask Ace) or retired.

As I write this I am surprised by how much I remember and how much I liked basketball...

  2. ewing played 17 seasons... obviously his numbers are down due to some horrible years in seattle and orlando...

robinson had military obligation which i think strengthen his avg numbers coming in closer to his prime but decrease his all time numbers... notice they print avg's basically to strengthen their wack ass argument... their all time numbers ranking would not jive well with their list.

i mean robinson was good but does anyone remember him really dominating and taking over games or going head to head with other big men like that... not really. can anyone recall any games robinson played in (well at that matter).

like i said ewing gets a bad wrap for not beating jordan (he had a legit chance against hakeem and again lost to a better person and that dumb finger roll he second guessed which should have been dunked)... his supporting cast to me is similar to what KG played with in minnesota. robinson had the same thing but led his team to lower accomplishments (telegraphed first and second round exits) in the west.

robinson's rings are duncan's rings... this is the reason duncan is listed as a PF falsely till this day. just you tube search a playoff game (not highlights) of the 90s with both and compare...
