Not Sure About Rooting for the Cowboys

Background:Understand the Cowboys are the 1 team I have consistently rooted for. I mostly root for players and who they happen to be playing for. I liked the Sixers back when Iverson was there (and I actually watched ball), I liked the Falcons when Vick was there. This is the fault of Jerry Reinsdorf (owner) and Jerry Kraus (former GM) to old guys who destroyed the greatest dynasty ever. This would be the Chicago Bulls led by His Airness, Scottie and Phil. Ever since then it's been about the players except with the Cowboys. I've been a TO fan dating back to the playoff catch against Green Bay in which TO promptly checked for his earring and cried tears of joy. So TO plus the Cowboys made me the fan that you all have seen.

Issue:
I have had mixed feelings about the Cowboys since they parted was with TO back in the spring. As you all know I don't believe TO was the problem. Fast forward to the beginning of the season and I now must make a decision. Root for the Cowboys and possibly have to listen to everyone (especially Ace) talk about how much better things are without TO. Or I can root against the Cowboys and talk shit about all the problems the team failed to address.

For background here are the issues:
No coaching leadership (not addressed)
No QB leadership (not addressed)
Turnover prone QB (not addressed)
Bad defensive play calling (addressed)
Bad offensive play calling (not addressed)
"Chemistry issues" (supposedly addressed)

I maintain that the only reason TO was let go is because Jason Garrett didn't get a head coaching job. His contract is more than Jerrv Jones wants to buy out. If Garrett leaves Jones could have fired Wade Phillips and only been on the hook for 1 year's salary. Then he could have brought in a real coach. Even Ace was salavating at the thought of Mike Shanahan leading the Cowboys.

But anyway I offer what will be the real reasons the Cowboys succeed, if in fact they do.

1. Tony Romo dumped Jessica Simpson (this is not a joke)
2. Romo isn't fumbling and throwing horrible INTs, especially in the 4th quarter
3. Jason Garrett actually makes changes to his offensive scheme from year to year
4. Felix Jones stays healthy
5. The offensive line stays healthy
6. The defense doesn't get destroyed
7. Miles Austin'09 is a better #2 than Roy Williams'08

None of these things have anything to do with TO but we all know ESPN, specifically Skip Bayless, Uncle Tom Jackson, Sheshawn, Chris Carter and Jaws, Chris Collinsworth, Ace and a lot of other folks will place any Cowboys success on the fact that TO is gone. Doesn't matter if the Cowboys become the Ravens and win with defense it will still be because TO isn't there. I'm a Cowboys fan but I can't root for that because it's just not right and people are stupid enough to believe it.

So maybe I'll be like Emeka and root for multiple teams. I'm not going to be a frontrunner though. This also creates a problem because I dislike something about every team. I like the Bengals because of 85 and Marvin Lewis but Carson is overrated and Mike Brown is the cheapest owner in the league. The Chargers are nice but Merriman's dance is annoying and he's overrated. There's always the Ravens (gotta love Ray) and the Colts cuz Manning is the best QB/Off Coordinator in the league and they have 2 Howard alums on their team, Bathea and Hardie. This will be interesting.

  1. stop beating around the bush...you are a cowboy til the day you die all the way back to staubaach and dorsett.... no but really.

i feel you. i was a bills fan and knicks fan in my youth mainly because i like ewing and bruce smith and by the way i am contrary so i had to root against everyone from shreveport rooting for jordan and the cowboys.... as you know neither of these situations turned out good for me but it was fun at least. fantasy football (and sports in general) has destroyed any allegiance i have to any team so i usually root with my heart attached to players rather than teams too.

i do believe the cowboys will be better. the giants will take a step back and washington will be middle of the road.... as always the division winner will be 10-6 and last place will be 8-8... that's just how it is in the nfc east. i like romo... i think he does not get the credit he deserves.... if you rank qbs he is top 10 and in some cases top 5. so you have to ask yourself even if he collapses 2 games out of the year or whatever who would you trade in to do better... there are like 7 qbs better maybe so BE HAPPY... you could be a fan of the other 25 teams with horrible qbs... people often look at the games he supposedly loses and forget the many he has won... i don't know about you but i often see romo running for his life and improvising ALOT... that can be disasterous regardless of the qb... more often than not romo is good on the run and so people expect him to be that way every single time.... football does not work like that. i bet you would trade your fantasy qb for romo in a heart beat...

  2. Join the multiple team rooting bandwagon. lots of room left... I am just a football fan. For the record, i have allegiances to teams over the years because I have met either coaches or like certain players.
Here is my ranking of my multiple teams:
Ravens (obvious reasons, Baltimore, been there since the innaugural game)
Baltimore Colts (now Indy Colts) met a lot of ex-players and their families and got to watch old film as a youngster in High school.
Oakland Raiders (Met Art Shell at high school summer camp. He gave me a o-line wrist band that I wore for most of all my high school b-ball games
San Fransisco 49ers My dad loved Bryant Young (dude who was a son of a boxer)
I loved Ricky Watters running style, the NECK, merton hanks and of course Jerry Rice, TO with the ridiculous catch against GB and Primetime...
    Arizona Cardinals.. the home team.
Philadelphia Eagles. ( I live McNabb and think he is mad underated.
Chicago Bears (lived in the city for a min and the fan base and enthusiasm is MAD contagious...

    There you have it. folks

  3. I must chime in… For the most part I agree with Mr. Wheeler. The Cowboys failed because of the points he's made and that the team will be successful if his points do happen. No argument there. Also I agree that the media will blame TO solely if the team bounces back. Right or Wrong, that is reality. I'm fine with that. The thing is that Chase doesn't understand the negative influence that TO can be. These are the problems with TO:

    1) When TO scores a TD, TO thinks he scored the TD… not the team scored the TD. He doesn't understand that in order for him to get a TD reception, the D had to get the ball back to the Offense, the running game had to be sound in order to open up the passing game, the O Line had to protect the passer, the other receivers had to run their routes and draw the defense, the RB had to pick up the blitz, and the QB had to deliver the ball on time and on target. All that had to happen and then his selfish ass could make the catch (with his shaky hands) and score the TD. He doesn't get all that. He just thinks he scored the TD.

    2) This is TO to Romo in the huddle, on the sideline, in practice, after practice… "Get me the ball man." "Yo, I was open." "They can't guard me." "Throw it higher." "Throw it lower." "Get me the damn ball." "Why do you always throw to your boy." "My bad for the drop, but I'll catch it next time." "Yo, get me the ball Tony." After a while, Tony is gonna say "Shut the F up!!!" When that happens, TO goes to Garrett: "Get me the ball." "These guys can't guard me." "Run some plays for me." "Tell Tony to get me the ball." "Tony only throws to Witten." "I need the ball to make plays." After a while, Garrett is gonna say "Shut the F up!!!" When that happens, TO goes to Jerry Jones: "Yo, these guys can't get me the ball." "You don’t pay me to be a decoy." "I'm a playmaker." "Tell these coaches to get me the ball more." After a while, Jerry is gonna say "Shut the F up!!!" When that happens, TO goes to the Defense: "This Offense sucks." "I'm trying to score for you guys." "Why does Tony only throw to Witten." "I should be the man." BLAH, BLAH, BLAH… The Mofo never shuts up.

So this dynamic is happening every week. Now Tony is not only having to worry about moving the team up the field, he also has to worry about making sure TO's bitch ass is happy, so that he doesn't have the mofo in his ear all the damn time. Now he is not focused on his #1 job which is to move the team down field. Same with Garrett… he should be focused on calling the right plays to move the team down the field, but instead he has to make TO happy, so that he doesn't have to hear him bitch. So you have a distracted QB and a distracted OC… this is not a winning environment and mistakes will be made. Obviously Romo and Garrett take some of this blame, but TO is the root cause. Say what you want, but we all played on teams with selfish dudes… whether it's pick up hoops with a ball hog or football with dudes that always want the ball… Team chemistry is important and TO is not a team player period.

    3) In the end, I don't care if it's TO scoring the TDs or if it's Witten or Barber or Austin or whoever. Just score. With TO, he ain't happy, unless he is doing the scoring. He doesn't get that sometimes the best thing he can do out there is draw the double teams and be the decoy, because that opens up the running game and let's the other receivers make plays. HE DOESN'T GET IT!

Bottom line for the good of the team, the CANCER had to go. Chase will say that people need to man-up and check their estrogen levels, but a cancer is a cancer. Will they miss his production? Of course, the dude can play. But I think they can better address their offensive inconsistency without him. There are still other issues (leadership, health, other guys stepping up), but in order to address the main issues, then TO had to go.

Anyway, lots of words… now the Cowboys have the opportunity to do some good things and surprise some people…

    HOW 'BOUT DEM COWBOYS!!!

  4. joose, no problem really supporting multiple teams but it sounds funny.... i mean do you realize you support over 20% of the league... a couple more career moves and you will be partial to half the league... where is the fun in that.

that TO dialogue in huddle was hilarious.... i keep envisioning a puppet commercial similar to lil dez, kobe, and bron with TO, romo, garrett, and jones.... that would be hilarious. i gues the humble one wants romo to be more like brady or peyton (qbs that are the obvious team leader and puts loud wrs in their place)---you know leadership... that ain't happening especially with TO.... do you think TO would behave with peyton or brady or brees similar to how randy behaves now. i say no... we'll see with trent edwards....

  5. emitt says the cowboys will get 7 wins this year. he projects possibly roy williams not living up to the task and the idea that the coaches are going to do a overhaul and address the lack of leadership as "not going to happen".

  6. The Cowboys would be alright if they had the Panthers offensive philosphy to run 55-60% of the time (where the strength of their team is), and let Romo pass to Whitten, Williams and the other WR (Aiken or something) from playactions and rollouts. I don't think Wade Phillips or Jason Garrett have what it takes to make this team a run-oriented squad taht they're clearly designed to be.

  7. Okay I am not saying TO can't be a pain in the ass, but a real leader would put him in his place. To Trey's point I do think TO acts different with Manning, Brees or Brady.

It's funny how Emmitt Smith said the Cowboys have no real leadership. One of the points Smith made was who is going to check the O Line when they don't block. One of the clips shown the most last season was of TO yelling on the sideline. He was yelling at the O Line because they blew multiple assignements and Romo got hurt. But ESPN reported it as TO being TO.

Here is my point, when you are right you don't have to be nice. Chemically imbalanced individuals get their feelings hurt when others point out that they suck instead of manning up and taking accountability.

If the team had real leadership TO wouldn't have to go. Jerry Jones knows Romo isn't a real leader because he had to coddle him by getting rid of big bad TO so everyone would be nice and "Romo Freindly" if that's not the most bitchass phrase in all of sports I don't know what is. I think the 16 year old gymnasts from the olympics might have more testosterone than Romo.
