Bias in Children

They didn't say where they are from, but it sounds like the South from her accent. I like studies like this because it's eye opening, it's a 5 year old child whose mother has no idea where the biases are coming from.

Interesting that this child, who is Black, states teachers don't care what students look like.

  1. i monitor this in my own child currently at 3.... she is always watching tv nowadays talking about, "i'm her"... at first i thought she was choosing the caucasian persuasion overwhelmingly based on her distaste for blackness... but when we ask her she says, "because she is wearing pink and pink is my favorite." we'll see how long that reasoning lasts.

  2. Not surprising. TV is the biggest influence on kid's lives. Most of the black images are negative on tv. Usually it's either crime or drug related. Even athletes on tv have negative associations... endless numbers of thug types in the NFL and NBA, whether it's tattoos, brands, hiphop gear, getting into trouble, fighting, etc. It's all negative perception. About the only positive black image is Obama and half the time the media is bad-mouthing him. Sadly there is no equivalent to the Cosby Show anymore (or to throw Chase and Trey a bone, A Different World). No major forum to portray blacks in a positive light. None of the major networks has a black sitcom anymore. Even your boy Tyler Perry's comedies portray blacks as goofy and humorous more than anything else (and who watches TBS anyway?).

Anyway, it's not just the media influence. Too many single moms and absentee dads are to blame too. Too few positive role models at home. Y'all mofos are letting our kids down...
