Ooo Wee... I Couldn't Resist a Story About UF Bums!

http://blogs.chron.com/fantasyfootball/2010/02/it_feels_great_to_draft_a_flor.html

I have long railed against one of the current "great" college football programs that cannot produce viable NFL players and finally someone wrote and article and looked up all these bums. Maybe I will compare The U draft classes from those years...

The Z Report by Lance Zierlein
It feels great, to draft a Florida Gator? Not so much
For the last few years I've heard scouts and coaches ding Texas players for having too many prospects who are either soft or just too weird, USC offensive players for being overrated and underwhelming and Big 10 running backs for being too slow.

The team prospects that I'm starting to hear get more and more heat starting last year and carrying into this year are the Florida Gators. Sure, Florida has had a history of busts at the WR position, but I decided to go back and look at Florida players drafted within the first four rounds (typical rounds of impact) since 2001 and here is what I found.

2001
Gerard Warren, DT - Browns (1st)
Kenyatta Walker, OT - Bucs (1st)
Jesse Palmer, QB - Giants (4th)

2002
Lito Sheppard, CB - Eagles (1st)
Jabar Gaffney, WR - Texans (2nd)
Mike Pearson, OT - Jaguars (2nd)
Reche Caldwell, WR - Chargers (2nd)
Jeff Chandler, PK - Niners (4th)
Alex Brown, DE - Bears (4th)

2003
Rex Grossman, QB - Bears (1st)
Taylor Jacobs, WR - Redskins (2nd)
Todd Johnson, CB - Bears (4th)
Ian Scott, DT - Bears (4th)

2004
Ben Troupe, TE - Titans (2nd)
Keiwan Ratliff, S - Bengals (2nd)
Max Starks, OT - Steelers (3rd)
Guss Scott, S - Patriots (3rd)

2005
Channing Crowder, LB - Dolphins (3rd)
Ciatrick Faison, RB - Vikings (4th)

2006
Chad Jackson, WR - Patriots (2nd)

2007
Jarvis Moss, DE - Broncos (1st)
Reggie Nelson, FS - Jaguars (1st)
Ray McDonald, DE - Niners (3rd)
Marcus Thomas, DT - Broncos (4th)
Joe Cohen, DT - Niners (4th)

2008
Derrick Harvey, DE - Jaguars (1st)
Andre Caldwell, WR - Bengals (3rd)

2009
Percy Harvin, WR - Vikings (1st)
Louis Murphy, WR - Raiders (4th)

2010
I'll go ahead and add on Tim Tebow in now...

  1. there are some relevant players on this list... look everyone can't be a standout. the u classes from the early 2000s screwed it up for everybody. comparing ed reed, sean taylor, shockey, gore, clinton, james, mcgahee, mckinney, vilma, wayne, johnson, moss, etc. will make any power house school look bad... notice no qbs from the u though...

anyway, rex as bad as he is led his team to the super bowl, alex brown, calvin murphy, percy are relevant. jabbar gaffney is relevant; he plays. kenyatta walker is good, lito is good, channing crowder is good, gerard warren is good, reggie nelson is a starter. everyone is not going to blossom....

if you can name another program that can compare to the U let me know....

i understand the criticsm... our best player in the nfl is probably lito and percy; neither are stellar... you can argue lito as a top ten cb. give the 2007 guys on up time....

  2. Trey makes a point... No one compares with the U. But, Florida's lack of NFL talent is surprising.

Some major schools notable current pros:

The U: Gore, Hester, Andre Johnson, Ray-ray, McGahee, Santana, Olsen, Portis, Ed Reed, Rolle, Shockey, Vilma, Wayne, Wilfork, DJ Williams, Winslow, No QB's currently playing

Texas (next closest): Benson, Jamaal Charles, Quan Cosby, Leonard Davis, Jermichael Finley (fantasy breakout star of 2010), Cedrick/Michael Griffin, Casey Hampton, Michael Huff, Jammer, Derrick Johnson, Shaun Rogers, Aaron Ross, Bo Scaife, Chris Simms (kidding), Ricky Williams, Roy Williams, VY (a real QB)

USC: Reggie Kardashian-Bush, Cassell, Fred davis, Sedrick Ellis, Justin Fargas, Dwayne Jarrett (very disappointing), Leinart, Clay Matthews, Maualuga, Carson Palmer, Palamalu, Keith Rivers, Sanchez, Seau (yes he is still playing), Steve Smith (Giants), Tatupu, LenDale White... That's 4 starting QB's (you can argue that Leinart is a bum, but he is the starter for now).

Bama (the National Champs): Coffee, Brodie Croyle (he got PT this year), Cornelius Griffin, Roman Harper, Le'Ron McClain, Antwan Odom, DeMeco Ryans, Chris Samuels, Andre Smith (Chase's boy from Hard Knocks)

The Ohio State University (lots of talent here): Will Allen, Bobby Carpenter (Chase's boy... kidding), Nate Clements, Joey Galloway (still in the league), Chris Gamble, Gholston, Ted Ginn Jr, Anthony Gonzalez, AJ hawk, Santonio Holmes, Malcolm Jenkins, Mike Jenkins, Orlando Pace (HOF), Will Smith, Troy Smith (threw him in there since y'all think he is the truth), Shawn Springs, Vrabel, Beanie Wells (breakout fantasy star 2010), Antoine Winfield.

Tennessee: Kevin Burnett, Chad Clifton, Shaun Ellis, Jabari Greer, Albert Haynesworth, Jamal Lewis, Leonard Little, Peyton Manning, Robert Meachem, Donte Stallworth (now a Raven), Jason Witten (pimp)

LSU: Addai, Dwayne Bowe, Michael Clayton, Glenn Dorsey, Early Doucet, Alan Faneca, Kevin Faulk, Randall Gay, Jarvis Green, Devery Henderson, Jacob Hester, Chevis Jackson, Bradie James (pimp), Laron Landry, Josh Reed, JaMarcus Russell (el busto), Marcus Spears, Corey Webster

Florida State: Anquan (Mr. Glass), Laveranues Coles, Cromartie (the genius), Darnell Dockett, Chris Hope, Seabass (Emeka's boy), Walter Jones, Greg Jones, Samari Rolle, Javon Walker, Leon Washington

Cal (underrated NFL school): Nnamdi Asomugha (the best CB in the game.. y'all can have Champ or Revis), Tully Banta-Cain, Boller (bum), Andre Carter, Justin Forsett, Fujita (superbowl champion), Gonzalez (HOF), DeSean Jackson (Emeka's boy), Longwell, Marshawn Lynch, Aaron Rodgers (pimp), Langston Walker

Howard (this is the complete list): Ronald Bartell (who?), Antoine Bethea, Marques Douglas (who?), Rudolph Hardie (who?), Geoffrey Pope (I've heard of him), Tracy White (who?)

Looking back, you can argue Texas, OSU, and USC put out better pros recently than the U. It's a good discussion...

  3. Trey did you really say Grossman led the Bears to the Superbowl? Devin Hester generated more offense than Rex Grossman.

    Ace you are trippin too.
    USC
    Bush, Palmer, Lendale (overhyped)
    Polamalu is great
    Matthews, Maualuga, Rivers are developing
    Seau is now a bum
    Leinert? You're hurting the argument

    Texas
VY is legit as is Shaun Rogers, Leonard Davis and Cedric Benson.
Don't talk to me about Roy, Aaron Ross, Huff, etc.

    Ohio State
Gholston and Carpenter are major 1st round busts
Celements is overrated, so is Hawk
    Gin?
Orlando Pace is now a bum, so is Galloway
Santonio is legit, Malcolm and Mike Jenkins are developing

I'll give you all other schools are catching up but the U is still at the top without question.

  4. LOL, this article is a joke most of the players on the UF list r not bums n for them to say the WR position were more of a bust than the QBs coming out of GATOR land clearly shows that there is somethg wrong with the person who wrote it (his judgement towards players of color)
